We have woodland garden at the back of our house with a number of mature scots pine trees in addition to a mountain ash tree and two birch trees. We want to fell the two Betula pendula (silver birch) trees. These trees are not in good condition. The tops of both of them have died and blown off. the trunk of one tree was damaged many years ago and the lack of bark on one side of the tree may be a site vulnerable to fungal infection. We have had to employ tree surgeons regularly to remove dead wood from both trees. We would like to replace the two trees with a multi-stemmed birch tree and a coral bark maple (Acer palmatum Sango Kaku) which we feel will be significantly more attractive than the rather weedy, mis-shappen spindly birch trees, which because of the damage to the tops of them cannot grow further.
