It was originally constructed by the Denaby Main Colliery Company to accommodate its workers and their families, and was initially called Denaby Main Colliery Village to distinguish it from the nearby village of Denaby, located about two‑thirds of a mile (one kilometre) away on the road to Hooton Roberts and Kilnhurst. Over time the "Colliery Village" part of the name was dropped, leaving the settlement simply known as Denaby Main. The original village of Denaby subsequently became known as Old Denaby. The area retains its historical identity linked to the coal industry and is part of the broader Doncaster district with the postal code DN 12.
