Its history is recorded as early as the Domesday Book, with its name likely derived from a Saxon landowner. Despite its early roots, significant development did not occur until the mid-17th to mid-19th centuries, when new transport links like the Wey Navigation, Basingstoke Canal, and the London to Southampton railway were established.
