Beddington is a suburban settlement in the London Borough of Sutton on the boundary with the London Borough of Croydon. It was formed from a village and retains a small‑town feel within a larger metropolitan context. The area is notable for its historical connection to Croydon Airport, which was the UK's main international airport during the interwar period. The airport opened in 1920 near Croydon and featured a temporary terminal, hangars, and offices on Plough Lane. A new permanent Neoclassical terminal opened in 1928 on Purley Way, and the airport handled more cargo, mail, and passengers than any other UK airport at the time. Innovations at the site included the world’s first air traffic control, the first airport terminal, and the first airport hotel. During World War II the airport became RAF Croydon, serving as a fighter airfield, and in 1943 RAF Transport Command was founded there to move troops across Europe.
