Rhydargaeau is situated in the historic county town of Carmarthenshire, Wales, which lies on the River Towy approximately 8 miles (13 km) north of its estuary in Carmarthen Bay. The town, recorded in the 2021 census as having a population of 14,636 with the built‑up area reaching 16,455, is notable for being the oldest town in Wales and for its Roman origins. Historically, Carmarthenshire comprised twin settlements—Old Carmarthen around Carmarthen Priory and New Carmarthen around Carmarthen Castle—merged into one borough in 1546. It was the most populous borough in Wales during the 16th–18th centuries and was described by William Camden as the "chief citie of the country". By the mid‑19th century, its size was overtaken by growing settlements in the South Wales Coalfield.
