Ryde is a locality on the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom, known for its historic railway connections. The Isle of Wight Railway operated a 14‑mile line between Ryde and Ventnor, opening its first section from Ryde to Sandown in 1864 and later extending to Ventnor in 1866. The Ryde station, situated on St Johns Road, was some distance from the pier where most travellers arrived. A tramway operated on the pier itself, and a street‑running tramway later operated from the Pier to St Johns Road. It was not until 1880 that two mainland railway companies jointly extended the railway line to the Pier Head, and IoWR trains ran through, improving journey arrangements. The locality also hosts Holy Cross College, a Catholic secondary day school for boys located in the suburb of Ryde, highlighting the area’s educational facilities.
