Woking is a town and borough situated in north-west Surrey, roughly 23 miles from central London. Its history is recorded as early as the Domesday Book, with its name likely derived from a Saxon landowner. Despite its early roots, significant development did not occur until the mid-17th to mid-19th centuries, when new transport links like the Wey Navigation, Basingstoke Canal, and the London to Southampton railway were established. These developments laid the groundwork for the modern town, which began to take shape in the mid-1860s. The London Necropolis Company played a pivotal role in this transformation by selling surplus land around the railway station for development.
