Horsell sits within the borough of Woking in north‑west Surrey, England, a region about 23 miles (36 km) from central London. Woking itself has a long history, first recorded in the Domesday Book as Wochinges, and the area has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic. The low fertility of the sandy soils meant that the region was sparsely populated in the 11th century, but between the mid‑17th and mid‑19th centuries new transport links such as the Wey Navigation, Basingstoke Canal and the London to Southampton railway line were constructed, stimulating growth. The modern town of Woking was established in the mid‑1860s when the London Necropolis Company began selling land around the railway station for development. Today Horsell reflects this heritage in its suburban character and links to the wider Woking community.
