    Tree WorksTrees
    In report

TPO 0012 (2005) T2: Chestnut to fell. This tree has extensive die-back throughout its crown with many branches completely defoliated. Closer examination shows that the bark on the stem is loose around 3/4 of its circumference from ground level to about 1.5m. There are no obvious signs of external damage. There are some brown exudations from the bark (syn. with P. syringae although no lab tests have been carried out) both on the dysfunctional bark and elsewhere. (Whatever the cause with a such a big decrease in sugars being sent to the roots over recent years it seems likely they have been using up their reserves of sugar and now those reserves are running out the root hairs are dying - hence the symptoms in the upper crown.) It is not known how long the bark has been loose on the stem. The owners are keen to replace the tree with a different species that gives a similar dappled shade.
