The area’s name derives from the Old English Earninga Strǣt, referencing the tribe of the Earningas who once inhabited the surrounding region, later known as Armingford Hundred. Ermine Street, a major Roman road that ran from London to Lincoln and York, passes through the area and is also known as the Old North Road from London to where it joins the A1 Great North Road near Godmanchester. The locality’s historical roots and proximity to this ancient route give it a distinctive character rooted in England’s early history.
