Longtown, Herefordshire, recorded a population of 620 at the 2011 Census. The locality lies 10 miles (16 km) north‑east of Abergavenny and 14 miles (23 km) south‑west of Hereford on the eastern edge of the county. Longtown Castle, also termed Ewias Lacey Castle in early accounts, is a ruined Norman motte‑and‑bailey fortification established in the 11th century by Walter de Lacy. The site reused former Roman earthworks and was later rebuilt in stone by Gilbert de Lacy after 1148, who also founded the adjacent town to support the construction costs. By the 14th century the castle had fallen into decline, though it was briefly re‑used during the Owain Glyndŵr rising in 1403. In the 21st century the castle is maintained by English Heritage and operates as a tourist attraction.
