    We would like to remove a small, first floor wooden balustrade and replace it with a simple equivalent in glass and stainless steel.We have provided photographs of the existing balustrade. It is a very simple structure, with square painted newel posts. It measures 5ft on the long side and 3ft on the other. The balustrade is not original nor does it appear to have any specific architectural interest, although we will obviously wait for your opinion on this.A glass and stainless steel design will allow more light across the landing and into the stairwell. The landing area is dark due to the lower ceilings on the first floor of the cottage and the deep colour of the floorboards. Built sympathetically, we feel that introducing a modern touch will contrast well with the existing "cottage features" upstairs e.g. wooden doors, open beams. Many old hotels in the Cotswolds seem to have successfully blended old and new in this way.A sketch of the concept is attached within our application.
