The village’s history includes the Black Dog railway station, which was the first station to serve Waverton and operated from 1840 to 1898. In 2003, residents founded the Waverton Good Read Award, inspired by the Le Prix de la Cadière d'Azur, a Provençal literary prize. The award encourages adult debut novels written by UK residents, judged by normal readers rather than literary figures, and aims to stimulate reading and support British writers. Founders Gwen Goodhew, an educational specialist who established Wirral Able Child Centre, and Wendy Smedley were instrumental in establishing the prize.
