It lies on the A98 road, roughly 5.5 miles (8.9 km) south‑west of Fraserburgh, and is part of the larger settlement of New Pitsligo to the south. The community includes a primary school and St Andrew's Parish Church, built in 1800, which is a category B listed building and houses the Raven Stone, a Pictish symbol stone. The parish was united with Strichen parish in 2002. Boyndlie House, dating from 1814, is a recasting of the fine 17th‑century House of Boyndlie, reflecting the area's historic architectural heritage.
