Esslemont is situated within the town of Ellon in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, approximately 16 miles north of Aberdeen. The locality lies on the River Ythan, which features one of the few undeveloped river estuaries on the eastern coast of Scotland. Historically, the area is part of the ancient region of Formartine and was made a burgh of barony for the Earl of Buchan in 1707. The name Ellon is believed to derive from the Gaelic term Eilean, meaning island, referring to an island in the River Ythan that provided a convenient fording point. The town is home to a unique collection of ancient yew trees and is twinned with the city of Chièvres in Hainaut Province, Belgium.
