Ellon, Aberdeenshire, is a town situated roughly 16 miles north of Aberdeen on the River Ythan, which features one of the few undeveloped river estuaries on Scotland’s eastern coast. The town lies within the ancient region of Formartine and has a history that dates back to its designation as a burgh of barony for the Earl of Buchan in 1707. Its name is believed to derive from the Gaelic term Eilean, meaning island, referring to an island in the Ythan that historically served as a convenient fording point. Ellon is noted for its unique collection of ancient yew trees and maintains a twinning relationship with the city of Chièvres in Belgium.
