We are specialist conservation architects and surveyors dedicated to the repair and adaptation of historic buildings. From Buckingham Palace to Medieval cloisters, we combine forensic scholarship with creative design to ensure Britain’s heritage thrives in the 21st century.

We are the custodians of history. At Martin Ashley Architects, we provide a comprehensive range of architectural and surveying services specifically tailored for the owners, occupiers, and custodians of Britain’s most significant historic buildings and estates.

Our mission is to guide heritage assets through the processes of conservation, repair, and adaptation. We believe that for a historic building to survive, it must remain relevant; we specialise in the sensitive alteration and development of these structures for ongoing, beneficial use in the modern world.

Preserving the Fabric of Britain’s Royal Palaces

Our track record speaks to the level of trust placed in our expertise. We have spent years developing niche skills in historic building conservation design that allow us to solve problems others cannot.

  • Buckingham Palace: We successfully addressed a complex historic stonework issue that had remained unresolved for over 150 years, meticulously sourcing new materials to match the original fabric.
  • Hampton Court Palace: Through the Anne Boleyn Gates project, we demonstrated our ability to introduce beautiful new timber features within highly sensitive historic settings.
  • The Canons’ Cloister: We applied a forensic approach to restore these important Medieval buildings, reversing decades of damaging interventions to create a perfect balance of modern living and historic importance.

A Team of Accredited Heritage Specialists

We are led by Martin Ashley and Kieran Kintrea, supported by a highly qualified team of architects and surveyors. Our Associate Partner, Giulia Baldin, is an AABC-registered Architect with over a decade of experience across the UK, Italy, and France, bringing a truly international perspective to our scholarly approach.

Our team includes members registered with the RIBA, ARB, and AABC, ensuring that every project is handled with the highest level of professional accreditation in the conservation field.

Our Collaborative and Scholarly Philosophy

We don't work in isolation. We take immense pride in our collaborative approach, working closely with conservationists and specialist tradespeople. This ensures that the finest craftsmanship is applied to every stone, timber, and lead fitting.

Beyond the building site, we are committed to the future of the craft. We regularly share our expertise through lectures, professional journals, and by hosting study visits for the next generation of trainee architects and surveyors.
