The town is near the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and sits on a crossing of the River Avon, where settlement is believed to have existed since before Roman times. Historically, it was a royal vill and possibly a royal hunting lodge under Alfred the Great. The arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1841 spurred growth.
