West Dean lies west of Singleton and is part of the Chichester district, whose county town is the historic city of Chichester. Chichester is a cathedral city and civil parish, the only city in West Sussex and its county town. It has a Roman and Anglo‑Saxon heritage and has been a major market town from Norman and medieval times to the present day. The city is the seat of the Church of England Diocese of Chichester and houses a 12th‑century cathedral.
