Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall are two villages that lie about one mile apart and together form a parish in the district of NR 16. The parish is located approximately nine miles (14 km) south‑west of Norwich. Norwich Castle, a medieval royal fortification, stands in the city of Norwich and was ordered by William the Conqueror in 1066–1067. The castle served as a gaol from 1220 to 1887 and later housed the Norwich Museum from 1894. The museum and art gallery contain significant objects from the region, including works of art, archaeological finds and natural history specimens.
