Bethesda, Gwynedd is a town and community situated in north‑west Wales. It lies on the banks of the Afon Ogwen and sits on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, giving it a picturesque setting. The locality is about five miles (eight kilometres) south‑west of Bangor, placing it within easy reach of the city while retaining a rural character. Bethesda is predominantly Welsh‑speaking, reflecting the linguistic heritage of the region. Historically the settlement was known as Cilfoden and was formerly called Glanogwen; in 1820 the Bethesda Independent was established, marking an early community institution. The town’s name, Bethesda, is used today for both the town and its community council.
