Duffus, Elgin, IV30 5RJ

Duffus is a locality situated near Elgin in Moray, Scotland, within the IV 30 postal district. The most prominent feature of the area is Duffus Castle, a motte-and-bailey fortification that was in use from approximately 1140 until 1705. During its occupation the castle underwent many alterations, the most fundamental being the replacement of the original wooden structure with stone. At the time of its establishment, it was regarded as one of the most secure fortifications in Scotland. By the time of the death of the second Lord Duffus in 1705, the castle had become unsuitable as a dwelling and was abandoned. The historical significance of Duffus Castle provides a tangible link to the medieval past of the region, and the locality itself reflects a rural character within the broader context of Moray.
