Historically, it was the most populous borough in Wales during the 16th‑18th centuries, described by William Camden as the "chief citie of the country". By the mid‑19th century its size was surpassed by growing settlements in the South Wales Coalfield. The locality’s postal district is SA 33, placing it within the broader Carmarthen area.
