The name of the village, now familiarly Bryn, was formerly Bryn‑troed‑y‑garn, a name that appears on the 1876 OS map where a farm was situated above Meadow Row. The first vicar of St Theodore's in Port Talbot noted the settlement’s name. Twelve per cent of the village’s residents speak Welsh.
