It lies within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, giving the area a rural and scenic character. The nearest town, Whitchurch, is approximately 4 ½ miles (7 km) to the south‑east of the hamlet. In 1931 the parish had a population of 87, and the parish was abolished on 1 April 1932 to form the combined parish of Litchfield and Woodcott.
