Brading, the principal town of its civil parish, carries the historic title of the ancient 'Kynges Towne', reflecting its long-standing significance in the area. The ecclesiastical parish once extended to about a tenth of the surrounding region, indicating a modest but focused community structure. Transport history is notable: the Isle of Wight Railway, operating a 14‑mile line between Ryde and Ventnor, opened its first section from Ryde to Sandown in 1864, later extending to Ventnor in 1866. The Ryde station was situated on St Johns Road, some distance from the pier where most travellers arrived. A tramway operated along the pier, and a street‑running tramway later connected the Pier to St Johns Road. It was not until 1880 that two mainland railway companies jointly extended the line to the Pier Head, allowing Isle of Wight Railway trains to run through, thereby improving journey arrangements for visitors and residents alike.
