Milton Hill lies within Abingdon, a historic market town on the River Thames in Oxfordshire. The area has been occupied since the early to middle Iron Age, with remains of a late Iron Age and Roman defensive enclosure beneath the town centre. Abingdon Abbey, founded around 676, gave the town its name. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Abingdon was an agricultural centre with extensive trade in wool, weaving and clothing manufacture, and it received charters for markets and fairs from monarchs ranging from Edward I to George II.
