Old Newton is a small village situated near Dagworth within the Mid Suffolk district of Suffolk, England. The locality lies approximately two miles north of the town of Stowmarket, to the east of the village. The River Gipping, which originates near Mendlesham Green, flows through the area in a south‑westerly direction, eventually reaching Stowmarket. From Stowmarket it continues south or south‑east, passing through Needham Market and Baylham before flowing between Great Blakenham and Claydon, and through Bramford and Sproughton. The river ultimately reaches Ipswich, where it becomes the River Orwell at Stoke Bridge. Historically, the river has powered several watermills, several of which remain standing, although none are operational today. The mill at Baylham retains most of its machinery and is the only complete mill on the river. The presence of the river and its historical mills contributes to the rural character of the area.
