The area is part of the former Newmarket Rural District, which existed from 1894 to 1974 and surrounded the town of Newmarket in West Suffolk. Cheveley is best known for Cheveley Park Stud, a thoroughbred racehorse ownership and breeding operation that has bred and owned many notable horses. The stud is the oldest in Newmarket and has a history of horse breeding on the site for over a thousand years, becoming famous in the early nineteenth century. The locality’s rural character and connection to the capital of British racing give it a distinctive heritage and setting within the wider Cambridgeshire region.
