Newmarket lies 14 miles west of Bury St Edmunds and 14 miles north‑east of Cambridge, and had a population of 16,772 in 2021. The town is a global centre for thoroughbred horse racing, race‑horse training, breeding and horse health, hosting two Classic races and three British Champions Series races each year.
