It lies some 16 mi southwest of Bath, 18 mi south of Bristol and five mi east of Wells, placing it within a short drive of several regional centres. The Mendip District Council was based there, and the town is surrounded by the Mendip Hills to the north. The River Sheppey runs through the town, as does the route of the Fosse Way, the main Roman road between north‑east and south‑west England, indicating a long history of settlement.
