Darshill lies within the civil parish of Shepton Mallet, a market town in Somerset with an estimated population of 10,810 in 2019. The town sits some 16 miles southwest of Bath, 18 miles south of Bristol and five miles east of Wells, placing it within a short drive of several larger cities while retaining a rural feel. The Mendip Hills lie to the north, and the River Sheppey flows through the town, providing natural scenery and waterway access. The historic Fosse Way, the main Roman road between north‑east and south‑west England, runs through the area, and evidence of Roman settlement exists. The town’s heritage includes a medieval parish church and a history of wool trade that evolved into brewing and cider production in the 18th century. Shepton Mallet was also home to England’s oldest prison until its closure in 2013. The town is the closest to the Glastonbury Festival and is near the Royal Bath and West of England Society showground, offering cultural and recreational opportunities for residents.
