It lies some 16 mi southwest of Bath, 18 mi south of Bristol and five miles east of Wells, placing it within easy reach of several larger cities while retaining a distinct rural character. The Mendip Hills rise to the north and the River Sheppey flows through the town, providing a scenic backdrop. The route of the Fosse Way, the main Roman road between north‑east and south‑west England, passes through the area, and evidence of Roman settlement has been found.
