Mendip District Council was based there, and the Mendip Hills lie to the north. The River Sheppey runs through the town, as does the route of the Fosse Way, the main Roman road between north‑east and south‑west England, indicating evidence of Roman settlement. The town’s listed buildings include a medieval parish church, and it has a history of medieval wool trade that later shifted to brewing in the 18th century.
