The bridge, which is 6.6 metres wide (22 ft), was built on the site of a previous bridge that may have been destroyed in the late 13th century. A timber bridge that had been rebuilt after the 1852 flood was destroyed in 1858, and the present bridge was designed by Thomas Penson as the third cast‑iron bridge in Montgomeryshire. It was renovated in the early 21st century, preserving its historic character while ensuring structural integrity.
