Botley, Hampshire, is a historic village and parish situated roughly three miles (4.8 km) east of Southampton. The settlement developed around a natural crossing point for the River Hamble, and it received its first market charter from Henry III in 1267. Over the centuries, the village grew thanks to its mills, coaching inns, and later strawberry cultivation. In the 18th century, journalist and radical politician William Cobbett described Botley as “the most delightful village in the world.” The village’s long history and rural character make it a distinctive locality within the Southampton postal district (SO 30).
