Milton Abbot is a village, parish, and former manor in Devon, situated approximately six miles (9.7 km) north‑west of Tavistock and six miles (9.7 km) south‑east of Launceston. The settlement lies within the postal district PL 19, placing it in the rural heart of South West England. Historically, the area is associated with the nearby ruins of Tavistock Abbey, a Benedictine house surrendered in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Only the refectory, two gateways and a porch survive, while the abbey church dedicated to Our Lady and St Rumon was destroyed by Danish raiders in 997 and rebuilt under Abbot Lyfing. Subsequent reconstructions occurred in 1285 and again between 1457 and 1458, leaving a rich archaeological heritage that hints at the village’s medieval roots. Today, Milton Abbot retains its character as a small rural community within the Devon countryside.
