Cothill lies within the historic market town of Abingdon-on-Thames, a civil parish situated on the River Thames in the Vale of the White Horse district of Oxfordshire, England. The town’s history dates back to the early to middle Iron Age, with archaeological remains of a late Iron Age and Roman defensive enclosure located beneath the town centre. Abingdon Abbey, founded around 676, gave the town its name, and during the 13th and 14th centuries it served as an agricultural centre with extensive trade in wool, weaving and clothing manufacture. Charters for markets and fairs were granted by monarchs from Edward I to George II, underscoring the town’s long-standing commercial significance.
