The town has a long heritage, with occupation dating back to the early to middle Iron Age and evidence of a late Iron Age and Roman defensive enclosure beneath the town centre. Abingdon Abbey, founded around 676, gave the town its name and has been a focal point for the community. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Abingdon was an agricultural hub with extensive trade in wool, weaving and clothing manufacture. Market rights and fairs were granted by monarchs from Edward I to George II, underscoring the town’s long-standing role as a commercial centre.
