The village lies approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) to the east of Wooler and south of Chatton, placing it within the rural landscape of the Northumberland area. The local area is associated with the Chillingham cattle, a breed that lives in a large enclosed park at Chillingham Castle. In summer 2022 the herd numbered 138 animals with roughly equal numbers of males and females, and the population has remained genetically isolated for centuries. A small reserve herd of about 20 animals is also maintained on Crown Estate Scotland land near Fochabers, North East Scotland. The village’s setting and its link to the unique cattle herd provide a distinctive character for residents and visitors alike.
