According to the 2011 census the village has a population of 1,793, of which 88 % are Welsh‑speaking, making it one of the most predominantly Welsh‑speaking areas of the country. Penygroes forms part of the Llanllyfni community, which also includes Llanllyfni village and Talysarn, together totalling 4,135 residents in 2011. The postal district is LL 54.
