Melton Mowbray is a market town in the Melton district of Leicestershire, England. According to the 2019 census it has a population of 27,670. The town lies on the River Eye, which is known below Melton as the Wreake. It is situated 19 miles (31 km) north‑east of Leicester and 20 miles (32 km) south‑east of Nottingham, placing it within easy driving distance of both larger cities. Melton Mowbray is sometimes promoted as Britain’s "Rural Capital of Food"; it is the home of the Melton Mowbray pork pie and one of six licensed makers of Stilton cheese. The town’s identity is closely tied to its food heritage and its riverfront setting, which together give it a distinctive rural character within the East Midlands.
