Minsted is situated in the Midhurst district of West Sussex, within the GU 29 postal code. The locality is close to the River Rother, a river that flows from Empshott in Hampshire to Stopham in West Sussex, where it joins the River Arun. The River Rother is 52 kilometres long, with most of its length in West Sussex; the first 10 kilometres lie in Hampshire. The upper section of the river, from its source to Midhurst, has historically powered watermills. The earliest recorded use of the river for milling dates back to 1086, when the Domesday survey was conducted. Although no mills remain operational, many of the former mill buildings still exist, and some retain their original machinery. The upper section of the river is also noted for early bridges that have survived since their construction in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries.
