Beal, Goole lies in the vicinity of the Aire and Calder Navigation, a canalised section of the Rivers Aire and Calder in West Yorkshire, England. The canal, first improved in 1704, was extended to make the Aire navigable to Leeds and the Calder to Wakefield, with 16 locks added. The system was further enhanced in 1778 when the Selby Canal bypassed the Aire below Haddlesey. In 1826 a new canal from Knottingley to the new docks and new town at Goole shortened the route to the River Ouse. The New Junction Canal, constructed in 1905, linked the system to the River Don Navigation, which by then formed part of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation. This historical infrastructure provides a backdrop of waterways and industrial heritage for the locality of Beal, Goole.
