Newmarket lies 14 miles west of Bury St Edmunds and 14 miles north‑east of Cambridge, and had a population of 16,772 in 2021. The town is a global centre for thoroughbred horse racing, race‑horse training, breeding and horse health, hosting two Classic races and three British Champions Series races each year. Newmarket has long royal connections, with James I building Newmarket Palace and subsequent monarchs using the town as a base. Queen Elizabeth II visited regularly to see her horses in training.
