Girton, Cambridgeshire, is a village situated approximately 3 km to the northwest of Cambridge. It is best known as the home of Girton College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. Girton College was founded in 1869 by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon as the first women’s college at Cambridge. In 1948 it was granted full college status, marking the official admittance of women to the university. The college became co‑educational in 1976, making it the first Cambridge women’s college to do so. Girton’s historic roots are reflected in its character and its association with the university’s academic life.
