Port Carlisle is a coastal village in Cumberland, Cumbria, England. It lies within the civil parish of Bowness‑on‑Solway. The settlement was originally called Fisher's Cross, but when the Carlisle Canal was completed it became the terminus and was renamed Port Carlisle. During the canal's operation the village played an important role as the sea outlet for Carlisle, handling freight and passengers. The canal was later superseded by the larger Silloth docks, making Port Carlisle less critical. Some trade continued via the Port Carlisle Railway, but traffic declined as the Solway silted up. Today the village retains its maritime heritage and quiet coastal character. The village's history reflects the rise and fall of inland waterways and the shifting economic focus of the region.
