The town is crossed by the River Eden and serves as the county town of the historic county of Westmorland. It was known simply as Appleby until the 1970s, when the local council renamed it to retain the Westmorland heritage; the historic county of Westmorland was abolished in 1972 but revived as Westmorland and Furness in 2023. Appleby lies 14 miles (23 km) south‑east of Penrith, 32 miles (51 km) south‑east of Carlisle, 27 miles (43 km) north‑east of Kendal and 45 miles (72 km) west of Darlington, placing it within easy reach of several larger towns while retaining a distinctly rural character. The town’s market heritage and river setting give it a traditional English village feel, and its status as a historic county town adds a sense of local importance.
