Enniskillen is the largest town in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and serves as the county town of Fermanagh. The town sits in the middle of the county, positioned between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne, and had a population of 14,086 at the 2011 census. Enniskillen Castle, a 15th‑century stronghold of the Maguires, now stands as a historic landmark; it was later brought under English control in the early 17th century. The town and the castle were expanded during the Plantation of Ulster, and Enniskillen was the seat of local government for the former Fermanagh District Council.
