Craigavon is a town in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, founded in 1965 and named after the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon. The town was planned as the heart of a new linear city that would incorporate Lurgan and Portadown, though the plan was largely abandoned and later described as flawed. Today, the urban area between the two towns is built beside a pair of artificial lakes and includes a large residential area (Brownlow), a smaller one (Mandeville), and a central area (Highfield) that contains a substantial shopping centre, a courthouse and the district council headquarters. The lakes are surrounded by a public park and wildlife haven with woodland and walking trails. Recreational facilities in the area include a watersports centre, a golf course and a ski slope. In most of Craigavon, motor vehicles are completely separated from pedestrians, and roundabouts are used extensively. The town also hosted the headquarters of the former Craigavon Borough Council.
